Volunteers

The Adult Learning and Training Center (ALTC) depends on volunteers to serve as tutors, on the Board of Directors, and office support and helping out with special events. In return, volunteers get training and experience, meet other interesting, like minded people, and perform a valuable service to their community and everyday lives. Without the skills and commitment of our volunteers, the program could not operate.

Volunteer Tutors

Our volunteer tutors are men and women of all ages, from many different backgrounds. What they have in common is an interest in helping others improve their reading, writing, math or computer skills. Full orientation and training, along with ongoing support are provided to all tutors. Generally, ALTC asks volunteers to commit to working with learners one to one or in a small group for a minimum of two to five hours per week.

ALTC provides tutors with:

  • orientation to literacy issues
  • basic tutor training
  • access to a variety of teaching and learning materials
  • ongoing support from the learner / tutor coordinator
  • a meaningful and satisfying volunteer experience

ALTC expects that Volunteer Tutors will:

  • commit to a minimum of two to five hours a week (office support a special events may take more)
  • attend the basic tutor training
  • maintain confidentiality regarding any personal information, inquiries and documents a learner may share
  • have a criminal reference check prior to starting to tutor
  • be punctual, prepared and committed to regular attendance

A good tutor is one who:

  • is responsive to the needs of the individual learner
  • respects the learner and appreciates that the he/she brings skills and prior knowledge to the learning experience
  • is empathetic, caring and interested in the learner
  • is creative in adapting teaching methods to suit the individual’s needs
  • is enthusiastic and willing to keep learning
  • can give constructive feedback
  • welcomes the learner’s suggestions
  • is well organized for each session
