What are LBS Levels?

LBS stands for Literacy and Basic Skills Levels, which are the reading, writing and math skills UP TO the Grade 9 level. There are 5 Literacy and Basic Skills Levels, starting at Level One. At ALTC we work with students who are at the 1-3 levels to upgrade their basic skills to higher levels.

How does ALTC know what my LBS Level is?

Before a student joins ALTC, we do an interview to determine what level they are at and if they qualify to attend ALTC. Sometimes an assessor will decide that the student is advanced enough that they will not benefit from training at ALTC and will then refer them to another agency such as TR Leger or Algonquin college.

What is a training plan? Why do I need one?

Once a student decides on a goal, we work with them to make a personalized training plan to help them achieve it. The training plan outlines the steps needed to achieve the goal, as well as timelines and proof of progress.

I am not available during your hours, but I would still like to attend the program.

We often have learners who are unable to attend traditional training times, so we find ways to help them with outside tutors and/or modified attendance.

ALTC can assess your situation and possibly arrange transportation for you to and from the centre or outreach sites.

Volunteers are ALWAYS needed at ALTC. We are always looking for volunteers to help with administrative work, work with learners and to be on our Board of Directors. ALTC provides all the necessary training to be a volunteer.
